ProFIT project InnoWerk - Development of innovative moulds for liquid silicone injection moulding

Lupe

Project duration: 01.03.2020 - 30.08.2022

This project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund [ERDF].

Components made of liquid silicone rubber (LSR) are increasingly being used in future-oriented industries such as medical technology, electrical engineering, automotive engineering and for articles of daily use. This makes economical production on a small and large scale using liquid silicone injection molding necessary. However, liquid silicone processing places very high demands on the molding tools (Fig. 1), which can only be met by mold and tool making companies at very great expense. Therefore, the high-precision molding tools required for liquid silicone injection molding are manufactured exclusively by specialized companies at very high costs. As a result, small and medium-sized mould and tool makers are threatened with a loss of customers in the rapidly growing liquid silicone market, especially to international competitors.

Aim of the research project

Lupe

Accordingly, the aim of this research project in cooperation with Roeper Formenbau GmbH, Berlin, is to develop novel liquid silicone moulding tools and to provide a process chain for their economic production. For this purpose, individual process steps are systematically developed and adapted. In addition, the novel process chain is to be realized with existing production equipment without extensive new investments.

As a result of the project, manufacturing technologies and strategies are available that enable small and medium-sized mould and tool making companies to produce liquid silicone mould tools of the highest quality. By using the novel process chain, the manufacturing costs of liquid silicone mould tools can be reduced by up to 50 %. In addition, the burr formation on the liquid silicone components (Fig. 2) is reduced to such an extent that subsequent deburring is no longer necessary. As a result, considerable cost reductions can be achieved in liquid silicone processing production.
