IAK ceramic processing

Welcome to the website of the Informative Working Group Ceramic Processing of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology (IPK) in cooperation with the Institute for Machine Tools and Factory Operation (IWF) the Technical University of Berlin.

One research focus of the Production Engineering Department at the Institute for Machine Tools and Factory Operation is the development of suitable processes and strategies for ceramic processing. The special property profile of ceramic materials already triggered an increased need for research in the 1980s. Specially adapted production technologies are needed to economically transfer the advantages of high-performance ceramics into modern technical products. This led to the establishment of the Informative Working Group Ceramic Processing at the IWF Berlin in 1987, which provides an ideal forum for an intensive and interdisciplinary dialogue between research and industry. Besides the processing of ceramics, the working group also deals with related topics. In particular, machining with ceramic-bound tools or the metrological measurement of ceramic surfaces on the workpiece or tool is of interest to the participants of the working group meetings.

The Informative Working Group Ceramic Processing pursues the following objectives:

  • To strengthen an intensive dialogue between industry, research and science,
  • Exchange of information and experience in various fields of research,
  • Discussion of specific problems and development of solutions,
  • Establishment of a cooperation network and conception of joint research projects and
  • Transfer of research results to companies.

The platform for this is the semi-annual working group meeting, in which a lively exchange takes place in presentations and discussions. The next Informative Working Group meeting will be on April 30, 2021 (Microsoft Teams Webinar). More information will be provided shortly.
